Here are 5 reasons why families choose to have an au pair:
1. Learn about a different culture
An au pair is a young person who embarks on a cultural exchange programme. They are usually just out of school or college and want to see some of the world before entering the world of work. Au pairing is a great way to do this. As an au pair they get to experience the culture, the language and family life of Ireland. In exchange the host family get to learn about their au pair's country. If they are lucky they might get to taste some of the cuisine from the au pair's country and the children may even get to learn a new language! Another huge advantage is that your children will get used to interacting with people from different countries. Today Ireland is becoming increasingly more multicultural and it is important that our children feel comfortable around people from different nationalities.
2. Extra childcare support around the house
Another benefit is that an au pair can help with the kids while you are busy with other things. We have all had times when you had to drag kids to things or places with you because you had no-one to mind them. For example if you need to go to the shops to buy milk. You might have to put all the kids in the car, drive to the shops, take the kids out of the car, buy the milk and then fill the car, seatbelts etc and then drive them back home again. In a case where you have an au pair, you can leave the kids at home while you go and buy the milk. If you are making dinner, your au pair can sit with your kids and play with them and you don't have to make the dinner, holding a baby in one arm. Making the dinner becomes a much more enjoyable experience and your children are happy because they are getting time to do the things that they enjoy. An au pair can also help with light housework, things like emptying and filling the dishwasher or making snacks for the children. These are small things but it's these small things that can really add up to making life easier for the whole family.
3. Enjoy a night out
Au pairs will often do 1 night of babysitting per week. This is a great opportunity for you to spend some quality time out with your partner, meeting your friends, or attending evening classes. You’ll feel regenerated after this and will have even more energy to play with your kids the following day!
4. Childcare support on your schedule
When you choose an au pair, we recommend that the family and au pair agree a timetable so that your family gets help from the au pair when you need it and your au pair gets her time off when she needs time off. In this way you can have childcare support when your family needs it the most. Also with an au pair, your children can be minded in a familiar environment.
5. Value for money childcare support
Au pairs are a lot more affordable than people generally believe. The ongoing costs of having an au pair in your home are incredibly low, especially considering the benefits you will gain from the experience. A family will provide board, food and pocket money to an au pair. We recommend minimum of €120 for 30 hours of help. The cost of an au pair placement will be €650 for a 12 month placement.
